Your character is capable of equipping many different types of cloth pieces at once. Certain clothes are the same type and you cannot equip them at the same time. Here is a list of clothes that are the same type and use the same slot.
Armours have their own slots and only short pants overlap with chainmail and ringmail leggings, but you can use pants with platemail leggings still. Class robes cannot be found as magic.
