Scribe

The Scribe is a pivotal merchant class in that without a scribe, a mage would be hard pressed to complete a spellbook and a Necromancer would be in dire straights as it would be impossible for them to make use of their Codex Damnorum. The Scribe copies spells from spellbooks and than can either place them in new spellbooks or sell them in their scroll form as they're quite useful to all casters alike. When it comes to Necromancer chants, they can not be copied but instead either found from monsters or through the use of spirit speak at various graves around the world map, they are than brought or sold to the scribe who will be able to use the inscription skill to place them into a Codex Damnorum, be aware however that if you do not possess the skills required, you will fail and destroy the scroll.

Guide to the Scribe

Character Creation

When you first create your character, you will be able to choose 1 skill at 50% and 2 at 30%. When I created my scribe, I made the mistake of picking meditation at 50% and inscription at 30% and item identification at 30%. I'd suggest going with this set up now that I have played for awhile.

At 50% - Inscription

At 30% - Item Identification

At 30% - Resisting Spells or Cartography

While in Merchant Base Class

You will want to make a little bit of gold through the job system that is available or by farming up some produce and selling it to a vendor in town. With this gold you will want to go to a vendor to train meditation up to 20% and than go to the altar in the Hall of Virtues in Britain or the Alchemy Shop in the northern part of Moonglow and train your meditation to 40%. This will do two things for you, help get your intelligence stat higher which is required to make scrolls and help to very slightly decrease time it takes to regain your mana when you use the meditation skill.

Once you have done this, you can either try to get Item Identification up which will also help with Intelligence gains or if you chose to get Cartography up it will raise your Dexterity which is not really of any use to a scribe but you do need 30 Dexterity to join class.

At some point, hopefully you have secured yourself a little money cause you will need to purchase a spellbook with the spells in it you need to gain and find yourself a tinker to make you blank scrolls (tinkers also make blank maps for the Cartography skill), they can be bought from scribe vendors though in low quantities. Once you have the blank scrolls, to use them you can either double click them to bring up the inscription menu or use the inscription skill on them to bring up the menu, it is just easier to double click, but you have options! The Inscription Gump is a two step gump, meaning you select the circle and than the spell. So lets say you want to make a fourth circle spell, you will select the Circle 4 button and than a new gump will appear with the circle 4 spells you currently have in your spellbook. This is how you gain in Inscription, making scrolls, don't fret however, while some of the lower circle scrolls won't sell you can hang onto the higher end scrolls and sell those to magic users as it is very beneficial for them to use scrolls as opposed to casting from their spellbook.

To Join the Scribe Class, these are the stats you must achieve:

Stats required to join: Str: 40, Dex: 30, Int: 50

Skill required to join: Inscription 65%

Either of these skills: Cartography 45%, Item Identification 50%

Once You've Joined the Scribe Class

Once you have joined the Scribe class, you might want to take a break from the Inscription skill for a bit and max out your Item Identification as that will help you cap your Intelligence which will ultimately help in the building of your Inscription skill. Do not worry about maxing out your Meditation as that will come from just making scrolls anyway and really plays a minor part in the replenishment of your mana.

Once your Inscription skill has reached about 80% you will notice a drastic slow down in skill gains, this mainly has to do with the time it takes for you to meditate, so if you can secure yourself mana regeneration potions and/or a camper, do so, they are a great help and will drastically reduce the time it takes to replenish your mana. With a grandmaster camper and normal mana regens, it is not uncommon to see a 75% reduction in the time it takes to replenish one's mana.

Armour restrictions

Restricted to chainmail armour.
